As smokeless-smoke culture continues to grow and expand into many different inhalation trends, hookahs have come out of the niche corners in the U.S. smoke-scape and into more of the mainstream.
Hookah is a much different way to smoke than other methods, though. It certainly doesn’t look like a cigarette, or operate exactly like a vape kit, so questions naturally arise. Are there risks that come with smoking hookah—is hookah bad? Is smoking hookah better than the alternatives? What are the benefits of hookah?
Hookah Cons
Some people think that, since hookah smoke is “filtered” through the water, smoking hookah is actually much safer than smoking cigarettes. This, unfortunately, is far from true. The water actually does little, if anything, to curb any harmful toxins that come from the charcoal. On top of that, a hookah session pulls way more toxins into your mouth and lungs than smoking regular cigarettes. The tradeoff, of course, is that you aren’t carrying a box of hookahs around in your pocket all day. Whether smoking hookah will be more harmful for you than cigarettes or other smoking alternatives really depends heavily on how often you would smoke hookah and how often you would smoke otherwise. That being said, odds are that the toxins from hookah smoke will come out on top.
Since the smoke pulled through the water is still tobacco and charcoal smoke, the water “filter” does little to protect people around you from secondhand smoke. Unlike with vapes, smoking hookah can certainly damage the people and things around you.
Hookah Pros
Of course, smoking hookah is far from being all bad. It’s popular throughout the world, and increasingly so. There are plenty of benefits to smoking hookah, and a lot of them you won’t find as much in other inhalation trends.
First and foremost, hookah is a social experience. It’s a fun and interactive way to smoke with friends, and with the responsible use of mouthpieces, it’s much more sanitary than passing a vape kit or a joint around. As far as pandemic hysteria is concerned, hookah mouthpieces might be the safest way to share a smoking apparatus.
Hookah smoke is still harmful, but a lot of the dangers are less than the cigarette counterparts. Secondhand smoke is a risk, but it isn’t as harmful as regular cigarette smoke. In the same way, the smoke from a hookah might very well cause damage to the walls or furniture around you, but not nearly as quickly or as badly as cigarette smoke would.
Hookah is fun, the right shisha choice can give you amazing flavors and huge smoke. It’s a relaxing experience that you can enjoy with the people you care about. Careful sessions in moderation can help limit the harmful effects while enjoying the social aspect.
